On Friday April 22nd ANTEA Cement celebrated the “Earth Day”. As every year, this year as well the focus of the event was to promote sustainable environmental practices and raise the environmental awareness among ANTEA employees and contractors.
Earth Day is an annual event, celebrated on April 22, on which day events worldwide are held to demonstrate support for environmental protection. It was first celebrated in 1970, and is now coordinated globally by the Earth Day Network and celebrated in more than 193 countries each year.
More than 250 trees were planted in our quarries by our direct and indirect employees. Among the specie planted are also 2 species that are in the red list of Albania. The focus of this one day event was “plant a tree for the planet”. This initiative will make a significant impact in our premises and measurable impact on the country and will serve as the foundation of a cleaner, healthier and more sustainable planet for all.
Trees help combat climate change. They absorb excess and harmful CO2 from our atmosphere. In fact, in a single year, an acre of mature trees absorbs the same amount of CO2 produced by driving the average car 26,000 miles. Trees help us breathe clean air. Trees absorb odours and pollutant gases (nitrogen oxides, ammonia, sulphur dioxide and ozone) and filter particulates out of the air by trapping them on their leaves and bark. Trees help communities achieve long-term economic and environmental sustainability and provide food, energy and income.
In the same day ANTEA celebrated the Best safety performance award of 2015 that was granted to ANTEA as the best performer among all TITAN Group cement plants. The award was granted to ANTEA’s for its efforts to create a Safety culture in its plant which is shared also by its numerous subcontractors.
Several of the contractors of ANTEA that are working permanently in the plant have been certified with OHSAS 18001 which is the international health and safety management system. The plant has over 1500 days without any loss time incident which taking into account the large number of direct and indirect employees working in the plant corresponds to over 3.314.636hrs working hours without any loss time incident.
Further to this celebration was celebrated also the “World Day for Safety and Health at Work”, an yearly ILO (International Labour Organization) event. ANTEA Cement from several years has joint to this international campaign for promoting Health and Safety. The annual World Day for Safety and Health at Work promotes the prevention of occupational accidents and diseases globally. It is an awareness-raising campaign intended to focus international attention on the magnitude of the problem and on how promoting and creating a safety and health culture can help reduce the number of work-related deaths and injuries.
